Violin Hire

As players and teachers we know exactly what students need from their instruments.  Better violins make a better sound, are easier to tune and more rewarding to play.   We favour makes such as Gliga, Zeller, Sielam and the higher end Hindersine and Westbury models.  Our violins have a RRP of between £200-£400. We occasionally find older violins too that match up to our high expectations.  

Hiring instruments makes sense as the quality of second hand violins varies hugely and damage is not always evident if buying online.  Good quality new violins are expensive to buy and young students will work their way through several smaller sizes on their way to a fully size violin.

The “Set up” of a violin is hugely important: the strings need to be just the right height above the fingerboard so the fingers don’t have to work too hard to press the string down, the pegs need to fit and turn smoothly so tuning is easy, the bridge needs to be at just the right angle and so on.  Each violin is fitted with a Wittner chinrest (which tends to be more universally accepted for it’s comfort and anti-allergenic quality) and comes with an Everest shoulder rest (to save you having to buy a new size for each violin).  We check the set up carefully and make any alterations each time before a violin goes out.  We replace the strings and check the pegs and adjusters are working smoothly.  

When you need a new size, we simply exchange the violin for the next size up.
